Reading Challenges

The Reading Challenge was added to the Literacy Project in 2024 with a pilot program for 2nd graders at McDonald Elementary. The four week, incentive driven program stressed increased reading. For every book read a student received a chance to win weekly prizes and at the end a chance to win the grand prize, a bike. The reading challenge ends with a pizza party for all participants and additional prize drawings. The second reading challenge in 2025 was held at Maryville Elementary with the VMI Class of 68 sponsoring the program via Palmetto Giving Day.

As we evolve in our literacy program, and work with educators, our reading challenge shifted in 2026 to first graders and each student was given a starter book. Going forward, first graders will continue to be the focus of future reading challenges and the goal for the 2026-2027 school year will be to have two sponsored Reading Challenges. Week one, each student receives a goody bag with certificates and a starter book. Each week, for the first three weeks, there will be prize drawings and on week four, a pizza party and Grand Prize drawings.
